Southeastern Louisiana University Summer Art Education Workshop- University Center, Room 103, SLU 10858, 504-549-2301 or 1-800-256-2771.   Ages 6-13.  July 10-20, Mon.-Thurs.  Participants may attend either a morning, 9:30 AM-11:00 AM, or an afternoon session 2:00-3:30 PM.  Students will construct homemade musical instruments with an artistic flair.  Enrollment is limited to 75 students, first come, first served.  Please call for more information and an application.  Cost: $45 per child.

MILLER MEMORIAL LIBRARY FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER

The Miller Memorial Library Family Resource Center is planning a FUN-tastic summer.  Our program calendar is filled with exciting activities and classes.  The activities and classes will be held in the Center at 108 S. Pine St. in Hammond.  Registration is required.  Registration is available Mon.-Fri. from 10:00 AM-noon & 2:00 PM-4:00 PM.  Unless otherwise noted, there is a registration fee of $1 per Summer Fun-tastic Activity.  To register call 504-345-5493.

 

The mission of the Miller Memorial Library Family Resource Center summer program is to provide activities and events that inspire creativity, build interest, develop skills and encourage social interaction in a nurturing family centered environment which promotes learning through experience for our community.

 

SUMMER FUN-TASTIC ACTIVITIES:

June 6-8      American Red Cross Babysitting Course-This course is ideal for current and future babysitters, teaching them the best ways to be safe and keep the children in their care safe.  This is a 12-hour course organized in three sessions.  Fun activities, exciting videos, lively discussions and real-life situations along with first aid and basic care skills are included.  A fee of $20 is charged for the course materials and certification cards from the American Red Cross.  This class is being taught by the North Oaks Health System Community Education Dept.  Ages 11-16 from 8:30 AM to noon.

June 13        Earth Balloon- Step into the center of the Earth Balloon at the Hammond Square Mall!  A 22-foot inflatable, portable classroom, gives students an up-close, inside look at earth science, geography and the world we live in.  Ages 5-12 at 10 AM & 11 AM.

June 14        Craft Day- Under the Ocean crafts.  Rachael will show you how to create fish and creatures that live in the bottom of the ocean.  Ages 7-12 at 10 AM.

June 15        Audubon Institute’s Bugmobile- The bug mobile is an exciting way to explore the world of insects.  Come discover the wonderful world of bugs and check out the Bugmobile!  Ages 5-12 at 10 AM & 11 AM.

June 19        Audubon Institute’s Aqua Van- Rhythm of the Reef.  Encounter the rich beauty and diverse life in an underwater world.  Discover the unique inhabitants of the coral reef.  Ages 6-12 at 10 AM & 11 AM.


June 20        Resume Writing-  Ron Abel, from SLU, will teach you to write the perfect resume to get the perfect job!  Ages 16 & up.

June 21        Craft Day- Creative Jewelry.  Kathy Farmer will show you how to create simple jewelry.  Ages 6-10 at 10 AM.

June 21        Pamper Me Teens!- PMS Day Spa will demonstrate skin and nail care for teens.  Parents are welcomed to sit in on the demonstration Ages 13 and up at 11 AM.

June 22        Tickfaw State Park’s Nature Center- Come discover the many plants and animals at the park.  Ages 5-12 at 10 AM & 11 AM.

June 27        Kindermusik!- Gina Anthon will help parents and children explore music and movement

through singing, dancing and chanting.  Come join us for an hour of fun.  Ages 2-4 at 10 AM.  June 27   Healthy Snacks for Kids- Melissa Gispert will show kids how to prepare healthy and nutritious snacks.  Ages 8-12 at 11 AM.

June 28        Craft Day- African Art.  Rachael will briefly discuss different African cultures and the art of masks.  Ages 7-12 at 10 AM.

Public Speaking for Teens- Speak UP!  In a casual environment,  teens will have a chance to actually practice making short impromptu  speeches, including telling a humorous story, introducing another speaker, participating in a debate or an interview, selling something, and practicing microphone technique. Ages 13-17 at 11 AM.

June 29        The Story Teller  Myles Gill will entertain with his talent for reading great children’s stories.  Ages 4-10 at 10 AM.

          Scoozy the Clown- Scoozy will entertain the group with fun and games. Ages 4 & up at 11 AM.

July 6           Basic Sewing for Kids- Arlette will teach kids to hand-sew felt animals.  Learn to sew on buttons and to do simple hand stitching.  Ages 7-10 at 11 AM.

Basic Sewing for Kids II- Arlette will teach older kids a variety of hand stitches.  Create a tote bag, your favorite animal or pillow.  Ages 11-13 at 1 PM.

July 7           Craft Day- Join Patti for an hour of fun craft ideas!  Ages 6-10 at 10 AM.

Movement for Moms and Toddlers- Samantha will teach “creative play” movement for Mom and her little one.  Ages 2-5 at 11 AM.

July 11         Basic Aid Training- Students will be instructed on how to provide minimal care for a person requiring First Aid.  Activity will include controlling bleeding, treating burns, caring for nosebleed, responding to a poisoning, planning a fire escape route and accessing emergency phone numbers.  Ages 7-12 at 10 AM.

True Colors for Teens- Are you a curious green?  A fun loving orange?  Are you “good as gold”?  Or “true blue”?  This interactive workshop explores basic personality types by assigning each of them color.  Using True Colors is a fun way to navigate through all situations.  It is also a great tool for conflict resolution among friends and family members.  Ages 13-17 at 10:30 AM.

July 12         Craft Day- Shrinky-Dinks.  Join Budd as he demonstrates this fun craft. Ages  5-12 at 10 AM.

July 13         CPR Demonstration- A Certified instructor from North Oaks Community Education Dept. will demonstrate rescue breathing and CPR, the Heimlich maneuver on a conscious choking victim, along with the use of the abdominal thrust for one who is unconscious.  Ages 10 -14 at 10 AM.

Basic Photography- Rhonda will show you some basic photography skills and demonstrate creative photo art.  Ages 8-12 at 11 AM.

Creative Cookie Decorating- Join Jackie as she demonstrates the art of cookie decorating.  Ages 7-12 at 12:30 PM.

July 18         Kids Talent Show!- Come join us for a morning filled with all kinds of talents.  There will be singing, music and dance!.  If you would like to be a part of this show please call Ola at 345-5493.  Ages 4 and up at 9:30 AM.


Music with Reginald Sanders- Take a musical journey with Reggie and friends.  Kids will enjoy music from around the world!  Ages 4 and up at 11 AM.

July 19         Craft Day- Candle making with Beth.  Come and learn the creative art of candle making.  Ages 8 -15 at 10 AM.

July 20         Food, Fun and Reading!- A nutrition and literacy program developed for Pre-K- grade 2.  Parents will teach their children food and nutrition by having children’s story books, with food  related themes,  read to  them.  Great  hands-on activities!  Early experiences with food are very important in forming life long attitudes and eating habits. For parents at 11 AM.

July 25         Journaling for Teens- Elly will teach the process of writing to privately explore and express feelings in a comfortable environment.  Ages 13 and up at 11 AM.

July 26         Craft Day- New ideas for rainy day crafts.  Ages 6-12 at 10 AM.

July 27         Movie and Fun day!- Come join the staff and interns for a movie marathon morning.  Ages 6 to 10 at 10 AM.
