SAFE
HOMES
- A Parent Network
Many
parents are concerned about the alarming increase in alcohol and other drug
use among our young people and the social acceptability of this use.
When parents join together and take a united stand against drug use,
they become much more effective than if they act separately.
Parents can benefit from the support of other parents by helping each
other resist pressure from parents who do not set the same limits on their
child’s behavior while creating a healthy atmosphere in which the use of
alcohol and other drugs are no longer considered the “norm”.
One hour workshop.
WHAT
IS YOUR DRUG IQ?
It’s
important for parents to be knowledgeable about the effects of drug use so
that they can help their children sort out fact from fiction about alcohol and
other drugs. The average age for
a child to first try alcohol is 11; for marijuana it’s 12.
Increase your knowledge of physiological and psychological effects of
drug abuse in this informative workshop.

Parent
Enrichment Classes
1-2-3-4
Parents!
Most
experts agree that the first four or five years of a child’s life are
critical to his or her development. The
attitudes upon which people construct their personalities develop from seeds
that are sown and nourished during these early years.
Using video presentations, 1-2-3-4 Parents! can provide the
information, skills and support that parents need — for their own health and
well being and for that of their children.
This workshop is available for parents of children ages 1-4.
Three forty-minute workshops.
ACTIVE
PARENTING TODAY & ACTIVE PARENTING OF TEENS
Parenting
is a tremendously “active” undertaking.
Based on the philosophy that it is the job of the parent rather than
the child to play the leadership role in the family, the goal of this
six-session workshop is to encourage parents to “act” rather than
“react”. Using video
presentations and discussion, Active Parenting Today encourages parents
to clarify family goals and offers useful skills that lead to “active” parenting. Workshops available for parents of children ages 2-12 and
adolescents ages 12-18. Six
one-hour workshops.
BALANCING
PARENTING AND A CAREER

parents encounter many challenges in today’s families.
With careful planning and problem solving, these challenges can provide
opportunities for helping children learn a sense of responsibility and
independence, as well as developing teamwork in the family.
One hour workshop.
BUILDING
SELF-ESTEEM
Self-esteem
is not what you do or know; it is not based on how you look or how much money
you have. Self-esteem is based on
who you are. This class
identifies sources of self-esteem in yourself and your child.
One
hour workshop.
DEALING
WITH SIBLING RIVALRY
Sibling
rivalry is natural, healthy and necessary!
From their relationships with their brothers and sisters children learn
how to live together, how to share, how to win, how to lose and how to love.
This workshop challenges parents to look at sibling rivalry in a new
way and offers skills to deal with rivalry more constructively.
One hour workshop.
ENCOURAGING
MOTIVATION IN CHILDREN
“What
we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in
pursuit of the child”. Studies
report that from 15 to 40 percent of our young people fall into the category
of the underachiever or lack motivation.
The cycle of underachievement can be broken, especially if parents
understand how it developed. This
class examines underachievement and offers ideas to encourage the growth of
motivation. One hour workshop.

GRAND PARENTING
TODAY
Being
a grandparent today is a special challenge.
With many children living without both parents or in a “latchkey”
situation when parents work, the role of the grandparent becomes especially
important. This workshop will
discuss two aspects of grand parenting: when visiting with your grandchildren,
or when you are “parenting again” as the primary caretaker.
HOW
TO HANDLE YOUR ANGER
Conflict
permeates our modern society, and violence has become commonplace. How we deal with our anger and how our children learn to
handle their anger is critical. This
workshop focuses on the emotion of anger, its underlying causes and how to
express and resolve anger in a healthy manner.

in-laws, financial issues, holidays and successful planning.
One hour workshop.
TO
STRESS OR NOT TO STRESS?
That
old saying that the family should be a place of tranquility and refuge from the
stresses of life is not necessarily true anymore.
Stress filters into the family from all directions and the stress of one
member can cause a ripple effect on each family member.
This workshop will help you learn to identify and cope with stress and
looks at signs of stress in children and ways to help them develop their own
coping skills.
One hour workshop.

around you? Each of us is a rainbow of “personality color”.

and why we respond the way we do. True

spectrum and lead to more effective relationships and better self-esteem.
One to two hour workshop.
